A brief introduction to Zi Zhi Tong Jian

The Zizhi Tongjian (simplified Chinese: 资治通鉴; traditional Chinese: 資治通鑒; pinyin: Zīzhì Tōngjiàn; Wade–Giles: Tzu-chih T'ung-chien; literally "Comprehensive Mirror to Aid in Government") was a pioneering reference work in Chinese historiography, published in 1084, under the form of a chronicles.

In 1065 CE, Emperor Yingzong of Song Dynasty ordered the great historian Sima Guang (1019–1086) to lead with other scholars, such as his chief assistants Liu Shu, Liu Ban and Fan Zuyu, the compilation of a universal history of China. The task took 19 years to be completed, and in 1084, it was presented to his successor Emperor ShenZong of Song Dynasty. The Zizhi Tongjian exposes Chinese history from 403 BCE to 959 CE, covering 16 dynasties and spanning across 1363 years. The work contains 294 volumes () and about 3 million Chinese characters.

Upcoming

My dear American friends,

Welcome you to my blog. In this blog, I am going to tell you Chinese historical stories. You may find something interesting in the stories or something sad. You may find not only some clues of classical Chinese philosophy, but also the reason of Chinese behaviors, personalities and characteristics. All in all, it’s up to your own feelings, analysis and thoughts.

The stories I am about to tell are from the one of the famous Chinese chronicle historical works, Zi Zhi Tong Jian(资治通鉴), also be translated as “Comprehensive Mirror to Aid in Government”. This works is viewed as the classical textbook of kingdom governs. It was read by the emperors or kings of Chinese dynasties. The historical stories are the main body of the work and the Author, Sima Guang(司马光), use the stories to inspire emperors or kings to think how to manage a country better. From point of the teaching, I think it is the first successful practice of case teaching methodology. And of course, I am not going to teach you, my dear American friends, I just want to share stories to all of you.

Well, if you want to know a little about China, welcome to read the stories. If you want to know some Chinese history, welcome to read the stories. If you want to get some clue of Chinese philosophy, welcome to read the stories. If you want to know a little about Chinese personalities and characteristics, welcome to read the stories. And, if you are just interest in stories, welcome to read them for fun.

Also, I think, it is a hard work to translate Zi Zhi Tong Jian (资治通鉴) from Chinese into English. But I still want to try. If you think my efforts are valuable, please leave your comments on my blog. That will be great encouragement which stimulates me to further efforts.

Thanks, my friends
